Working with families
Working in the home directly with families means that we are in the child’s natural environment where they communicate every day and feel most comfortable.
It gives the opportunity to practice functional every day skills which can be carried over when the therapist is not present. It also means that we can help set up a communication friendly environment.
Work in the home includes:
-
Case history and discussion with the
parents/carers
-
Assessment
-
Observation
-
Modelling strategies
-
Video sessions and feedback
-
Practicing specific therapy approaches with parents/carers
-
Generalising of skills
-
Providing resources needed in order to enable carry over
-
Opportunities for problem solving
At The Giraffe Centre in Ongar we are committed to providing high-quality, child centred therapy for all children and families who attend. We want to ensure that children make progress with their areas for development whilst celebrating and appreciating their strengths and existing skill set.
It is our priority to ensure that skills developed in The Giraffe Centre are generalised into the home and the child’s natural everyday life, therefore our therapists run a simultaneous therapy and parent coaching model to ensure that parents feel confident to apply the learnt strategies at home and in natural contexts.

Helping children become confident communicators.
"Justine's work with Shyla was fantastic! Shyla went from eating very few foods to a great number in every food group in a short space of time.
Justine built a fantastic rapport with Shyla where Shyla became very comfortable and looked forward to her sessions with Justine.
The invaluable techniques Justine taught me as a mum in offering Shyla food and making it fun gave me the confidence to continue the progress outside the sessions and into everyday life.
Can't recommend her services highly enough!"
